Like most comics, Toronto’s Keith Pedro probably isn’t for everyone, but if his observations ring true for you, there’s reason to be excited. Pedro’s debut album Grindecology is available now, and its 32 tracks offer a good overview of his two comic specialties: sketch (he is part of the troupe known as the BOOM) and standup. If you are unfamiliar with Pedro’s unique brand of humour, these samples should tell you everything you need to know.

His biggest fear

Pedro has spent far too much time watching strippers and porn, two preoccupations that are starting to colour his outlook on parenting. “My biggest fear now is to have another daughter, you know what I mean? I don't want to have another daughter, not because raising a girl is hard. It's because strippers and porn stars have taken the best names now for girls. They have! I went to a strip club and I met a Phoenix, a Jade, a Sophia. You know what I mean? All the names that I want to name my daughter. What the f*ck am I supposed to name my daughter now? Names that no one's going to be using like Mallory or Dolores. You know what I mean? Agnes? If I name my daughter Agnes, she's gonna come out of the womb knitting a f*cking quilt, bro.”

Your useless years

Pedro didn’t get much out of high school. To this day, he maintains that far too much time is wasted learning about things we don’t need in real life. Math is a particular source of frustration for the comic. “As an adult, when the f*ck have you even had to use BEDMAS? Never, bro. I never had to solve a bracket and an exponent back-to-back ever as an adult. Knowing the solution to pi has never helped with an adult situation.”

Racial confusion

Pedro has a lot to say about race, particularly the everyday confusion that comes from living in a diverse, multicultural city like Toronto. “My buddy, he's on Tinder and he showed me this girl, okay. He's like, ‘Yo, check how beautiful this girl is. She's half Jewish and half Italian.’ I'm like, ‘Bro, that don't make f*cking sense. You can't be half a country, half a religion. Do you understand that Jewish people are born all over the world? Do you know that?’ Can you imagine if he got robbed? I'm like, ‘Dude, you can't give that description to the police.’ You know what I mean? What did he look like? ‘Oh dude, you could tell. Very distinct face. He's half Brazilian, half Aquarius.”
