For some Torontonians, last night totally sucked. The weather was gloomy and rainy, the Jays lost a key game putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy, and skunks are everywhere. But for one Torontonian, last night was possibly the best night of his life unless there’s some other night where he won $25,000.

Chris Robinson took home this year’s SiriusXM Top Comic crown in front of a packed Queen Elizabeth Theatre during JFL42 last night. Robinson beat out runners up Sophie Buddle of Vancouver and Che Durena of Toronto, and rest of the hilarious field including Mayce Galoni, Graham Clark, Kevin Banner, Mike Delamont and Julia Hladkowicz.

Not only does Robinson get the oversized cheque but also spots in JFL42 in Toronto, JFL NorthWest in Vancouver, the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, AND a Just For Laughs: All Access taping that will of course air right here on Comedy.  Buddle and Durena didn’t go home totally unhappy as they’ll each get Just For Laughs: All Access tapings and a show at JFL42 next year.

Big congrats to Chris and everyone involved as the contest wasn’t as simple as showing up and telling a bunch of jokes. The contest began five long months ago with registration, then live auditions, followed by the semi-finals via an online vote, and concluding with the big finale where finalists performed in front of a huge crowd and panel of judges including Ron Funches and industry experts. This year there was also a nation-wide text-to-vote, so after all that there can be no denying that Robinson deserves the title unless he has a humongous family who is very good at texting.

It was a great night hosted by Canada Laughs’ Ben Miner and featuring a performance by legendary Ottawa native, Tom Green. Robinson now joins Derek Seguin, Faisal Butt, Pete Zedlacher, Eric Andrews, Matt O’Brien and Brian Stollery in the gilded hall of Top Comics. Go out and support your local comedians and help them become future Top Comics or continue sitting there doing nothing and watch Chris’ audition vid below!
